Fishing Report June 1, 2009
Reported by:  Steve Bryson

Fishing has been stellar so far this year. Hatches are pretty much on schedule and the fish are definitely looking up. Water temps are holding good and the fish are active and feeding regularly. The recent rains have really helped keep the insect activity going as it should.

Sulphurs continue to be the dominant hatch and are very active in the early morning hours and evening hours. Size 18 Bighorn Sulphurs have done the trick so far when the fish were rising. Our Sulphurs on the Hi usually have a bit more yellow in them than your standard sulphur pattern and the Bighorn variation of the sulphur will be your closest match.

Subsurface activity has been dominated by dropper rigs lately. Drifting big nymph patterns under Stimulators or dropping a big BHPT off the back of a Woolly Bugger, under an indicator, and dredging through deep slots are a couple techniques that should work well throughout the day. Unless the rising fish are spotted of course. Size does not seem to matter lately when talking about nymphs. I have been using larger nymphs than normal lately, to get the fly down, and have been doing well. The key is to get something down to them on the bottom and they will handle the rest. Gotta love swinging those big nymphs through the slots!

On another note, Bill and I took advantage of a beautiful day today and decided to have a Guides Day Out on the Hi. The day started off just like most others, drifting along casting to likely spots and watching for the risers to start sipping from the top. Caught fish all along the route and really had a good time. Up until we reached a secret area where we intended to check and see if some old acquaintances had made their way back. This is where things got serious and we put our Game Faces on. This was the real reason for the trip after all. To recon a few select areas and to see if we could make contact with Mr. Striper. To make a long story short. We made contact! Cant really divulge any more info, due to the top secret nature of the trip, but will include a picture here of the years first striper. And yes. Before you ask. He was taken with a FLY! Enjoy!
