Fishing Report:  January 2, 2010
Reported by:  Steve Bryson

Fishing has been slow lately on the Hiwassee River. TVA has been spilling water in order to try and get the lakes down to winter pool. The tremendous amounts of rain that we have gotten lately have really put them behind schedule. Wading is definitely not advised during these high water periods. However, if you do have a drift boat and decide to fish, you might just get lucky. TWRA is still stocking and these fish have virtually zero fishing pressure on them right now, so they would be primed to really "turn on" at any given time. It would be a great day if you could time it just right.

Dead drifting large, heavily weighted Woolly Buggers and Prince nymphs seems to be the ticket for triggering bites on these high water days. The fly doesn't really matter that much. The key is to be able to keep your fly on the bottom. That is the most important thing with these conditions. Also, fishing closer to the banks than normal. The fish will hold closer to the banks in this high water.

As always, feel free to stop by the shop or give us a call for the latest fishing info. or just to check on the days water release schedule. We are always glad to help.
